Chromatography !

Process for separating components of a mixture.

Chromatography can be used to separate mixtures of coloured compounds. Mixtures that are suitable for separation by chromatography include inks, dyes and colouring agents in food.

This chromatography experiment is carried out on tissue. A dot of the black ink is placed near the bottom of a strip of tissue. The tissue is then placed upright in a glass of water.

As the water soaks up the tissue, it carries the ink with it. Different molecules run up the paper at different rates. As a result, components of the solution separate and becomes visible.
